SAINT-GOBAIN has been in Brazil since 1937, where it owns companies such as: Saint-Gobain Canalização, Brasilit, Saint-Gobain Vidros, Saint-Gobain Abrasivos, Saint-Gobain Cerâmicas e Plásticos, Saint-Gobain Quartzolit and Saint-Gobain Materiais Cerâmicos. Some of them had their traditional corporate names changed as of November 1st, 2000:

Its entrance in Brazil happened through the acquisition of Companhia Metalúrgica Barbará and of Brasilit S/A. Today, after almost 70 years of ongoing development, SAINT-GOBAIN holds a prominent position, standing as one of the largest industrial groups in the country.

History in Brazil

In almost 70 years of activities in Brazil, SAINT-GOBAIN presents a continuous growth, both in volume of operation and in number of activities. Brazil is today one of the countries where the group is present with the fullest operational range.

  Year Fact
1937 - Foundation of Companhia Metalúrgica Barbará with manufacture of centrifuged cast   iron pipes.
- Foundation of Brasilit with manufacture of concrete pipes and fibercement products (as   of 1940).
1960 - Acquisition of Santa Marina, a company founded in 1896 to manufacture bottles.

1971 - Incorporation of Indústrias Reunidas Vidrobrás by Santa Marina, bringing an   important industrial park for manufacture of flat glasses and fiberglass.
1974 - Constitution of CEBRACE - Cia Brasileira de Cristal, by Santa Marina (52.5%) in   association with Providro - Cia Produtora de Vidro (47,5%), to manufacture "Float"   crystal glass.
1976 - Foundation of Santa Susana Mineração (a supplier of materials to the glass industry).
1987 - Establishment of two important joint-ventures by Santa Marina with Cisper: RIMISA   (Vidraria Rio Minas) and SUBRASA (Vidraria Sul Brasil).
1990 - Inauguration of the second unit of CEBRACE for manufacture Float crystal, in   Caçapava (SP).
- Acquisition of the Norton international group, a leader in the field of abrasives and   which, in Brazil, controls the company Norton S.A. Ind. E Com. Ltda.
1991 - Inauguration of one more plant of Santa Marina in Capivari (SP) for production of   Vetrotex® reinforcement fibers.
1992 - Constitution of another important partnership, Eterbrás Tec Industrial Ltda., a
  joint-venture between Brasilit (55%) and Eternit (45%) for production of fibercement   sheets and water tanks.
1996 - One hundredth anniversary of Companhia Vidraria Santa Marina.
- Inauguration of the third Float unit of CEBRACE, in Jacareí (SP).
- Acquisition of Carborundum Abrasivos Ltda., a producer of bonded and coated   abrasives and also Carborundum do Brasil Ltda., a manufacturer of high-performance   refractory products and ceramic fibers, which up until then, had not been produced in   Brazil by SAINT-GOBAIN.
1997 - Acquisition of Winter do Brasil Ferramentas Diamantadas and Bornitrid Ltda.
- Acquisition of Argamassas Quartzolit Ltda., a Brazilian leader in Cimentcola and   industrialized mortars.
1998 - Acquisition of Fundição Aldebarã Ltda., a Brazilian manufacturter of cast iron   connections for water and sewage piping.
1999 - Acquisition of Norton Cerâmicas Avançadas Ltda., a manufacturer of high-alumina   ceramic products.
- Acquisition of Casil Indústria e Comércio Ltda., which manufactures Silicon Carbide.
2000 - Creation of Saint-Gobain Abrasivos Ltda., through the merger of Norton, Carborundum   Abrasivos and Winter.
- Acquisition of Keramus Cerâmicas Especiais Ltda., a manufacturer of steatite,   cordierite and mulcorite ceramic products.
- Acquisition of Chemfab do Brasil Ltda., a manufacturer of fiberglass fabrics coated with   fluorocarbon resins PTFE (Polytetrafluoroethylene).
- Acquisition of Construmega - Megacenter da Construção Ltda., a building material   distribution network, known by the trademark TELHANORTE.
- Alteration of the corporate names of several companies of the Group, as of November   (see table above).
2001 - Incorporation of Norton Cerâmicas Avançadas Ltda. and Keramus Cerâmicas Especiais   Ltda., by Saint-Gobain Cerâmicas & Plásticos Ltda.
- Incorporation of Santa Susana Mineração Ltda., by Mineração Jundu Ltda.
2002 - Incorporation of Chemfab do Brasil Ltda. by Saint-Gobain Cerâmicas & Plásticos Ltda.
2003 - Incorporation of Fundição Aldebarã Ltda. by Saint-Gobain Canalizações S.A.
